Description

A COMPLETE SET OF TESTS THAT CHECK: • Serum iron (amount of iron circulating in blood) • Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC) — how much iron the blood can bind (reflecting transferrin) • Ferritin — storage form of iron in body tissues • Transferrin saturation — percentage of transferrin binding sites occupied by iron WHAT THIS TEST SUITE REVEALS: • Whether the body’s iron stores are sufficient, depleted, or overloaded • If iron transport in blood is adequate or excessive, via TIBC and transferrin saturation • Whether ferritin levels reflect true iron stores or are influenced by inflammation • Patterns consistent with iron deficiency (low iron, high TIBC, low ferritin, low saturation) • Patterns consistent with iron overload (high iron, low TIBC, high ferritin, high saturation) • Possible diagnoses: iron deficiency anemia, anemia of chronic disease, hemochromatosis, or other disorders of iron metabolism • Basis for guiding iron supplementation, monitoring therapy, or further investigation of underlying causes
