A COMPLETE SET OF TESTS THAT CHECK: • Total T4 (thyroxine) — bound + free hormone • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) — pituitary signal to thyroid • Free T3 (triiodothyronine) — active T3 not bound to proteins • Free T4 — unbound, bioavailable thyroxine • Thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb) — antibodies against thyroglobulin • Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) — antibodies against thyroid peroxidase enzyme WHAT THIS TEST SUITE REVEALS: • The functional status of the thyroid (whether it’s producing too much or too little hormone) • Whether the regulation by the pituitary (via TSH) is appropriate • How much active thyroid hormone (T3, T4) is available for body tissues • Whether there is autoimmune activity against thyroid tissue (via TgAb and TPOAb) • Helps distinguish causes of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, e.g. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Graves’ disease • Useful for monitoring thyroid disease, response to therapy, or to clarify ambiguous thyroid function results
